Intelligent RTU/Controller

Internet Features

ICL Intelligent controllers/RTU's (EtherLogic, ScadaFlex Plus and ICL-4300) are available with several hardware and software features that allow you to take advantage of Internet technologies and connectivity:

  • Ethernet (10BaseT)
  • Serial ports and internal modem for PPP connections
  • Web server (HTTP)
  • FTP server & client
  • Telnet support
  • Email support (with attachments)

Ethernet

Ethernet is a standard feature of the EtherLogic and ScadaFlex Plus - Ethernet and an option on the ICL-4300. All use a standard RJ-45 modular jack and support 10BaseT connections. Use this feature to tie into your plant floor network, corporate LAN or the Internet. Connect the controller to a hub or switch for multipoint networks or directly connect it to a PC or another controller with a crossover cable.

Serial ports and internal modem

The serial ports and internal modem (option) can be used to support standard PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connections. This can be useful if an Internet connection is not available or you need to dial into the unit for remote maintenance, monitoring or to download a data log file.

Web server

A Web server is available for ICL Intelligent controllers. This allows you to create Web based user interfaces to your application programs. The implications of this are quite significant:
  • no special software (such as an expensive SCADA package) is required for the user; he can use the Web browser that he already has
  • allows you to create interfaces that are accessible anywhere in the world (with password security, if desired)

FTP server & client

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is supported. The controller can act as either a server, client or both. FTP can be very useful for updating application programs or configuration files, and transferring data log or alarm log files. Both client and server options may be utilized over a dialup link as well.

Telnet

Using the Telnet protocol, you can access a remote textual user interface on the controller. This is a very convenient way of performing system maintenance and monitoring (check for errors, change the time/date or even reboot the unit).

Email

Using the SMTP protocol, you can email based on any condition in the controller. You can also insert any register data you wish into the body of the message. You can even attach data logs to email messages. Email works over both email and PPP dialup.
