Case Histories

Standard Products

In 1995, ICL released its first PC compatible controller product aimed at the telemetry and remote process control markets. The controller, the ICL-4200 series, was based on a third party CPU board and ICL designed input/ output and sensor conditioning circuits.
Kress Corporation installed ICL-4200 Series Controllers in large-scale custom vehicles used in mining and heavy manufacturing. The controllers provide traction and stabilization controls for safety and ease of use by their operators. kress

In 1997, ICL released its own PC compatible CPU called the "PC on a Stick" and shortly thereafter released the ICL-4300 "PC in a Brick" based upon this CPU board. The new PC on a Stick and PC in a Brick products feature an extra level of ruggedness including an extremely wide operating temperature range for a unique but growing market niche. Customers in this marketplace require high reliability PC compatible industrial computers, operating directly outdoors in both freezing and desert heat climates. In addition, the new products expanded on the interconnectivity and communications capabilities of conventional desktop PCs including sophisticated networking over hardwiring, radio, telephone lines, cellular telephone, Ethernet and Internet facilities. The PC in a Brick provides a modular solution for low volume production and one-of-a-kind systems while the PC on a Stick provides a medium volume solution for cost sensitive custom applications.

Custom & Private Label

PCOS
In addition to its own line of controllers, ICL designs and manufactures circuit boards and finished products for customers who require the ruggedized PC compatible technology that ICL has developed, packaged into unique products serving a variety of marketplaces. These customers benefit from the use of an off-the- shelf PC on a Stick core, lowering development costs to mainly to the cost of designing and tooling the portions of the product that are unique to the application.

Raychem (Chemelex Division)

faucet
ICL developed the current microprocessor based controls for sensing water and petrochemical leaks in storage tanks facilities as well as heat-trace systems for freeze protection of industrial pipelines with high efficiency energy management.

Road Safety Systems

ambulance
ICL cooperatively developed a product for use in emergency vehicles (police, fire and ambulance) equivalent to the black-box flight recorders used in commercial aircraft. The device records the speed, location, acceleration and deceleration, and status of warning lights and sirens in these vehicles using Global Positioning Satellite receivers and vehicle mounted sensors. The device is also used as an operator training tool providing immediate feedback for improving driving skills and reducing wear and tear on the vehicles. In the event of an accident, the recorded data from the device provides unbiased evidence for investigations and litigation.

Lockheed-Martin

space station
ICL designed the incubator control computers used for maintaining the temperature and humidity of experiment chambers and for datalogging experimental processes in NASA's International Space Station. The design includes special mechanical packaging to withstand the vibration and high G-forces experienced upon lift-off on Space Shuttles used to transport the incubators to the Space Station.

Intel Corporation & Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)

oven
Over the past 6 years, ICL has developed and manufactured multiple microprocessor based devices to improve the production yields and safety of diffusion furnaces used to manufacture high-density integrated circuits.

HydroLynx

tower
ICL has developed a very low-power weather station for monitoring, recording and reporting via radio telemetry. The weather station is designed to operate in hostile outdoor environments for over a year on a single gell-cell battery even without solar cells for recharging, yet supports most of the processing and datalogging capabilities of the ICL-4300 "PC in a Brick" controller using the unique low power features of the PC on a Stick.
